If approved, gas prices could climb even higher.

Today in Olympia, the House Transportation Committee proposed raising the state gas tax another 10 cents. Representative Judy Clibbon of Mercer Island, chair of the committee, will seek the measure as part of a larger transportation package. She and several Democrats plan to formally unveil their proposal Wednesday.

The plan could meet stiff resistance in the Senate, which is controlled by Republicans and helped by two Democrats who have said they will cross the aisle to oppose the measure.

Senate Majority Leader Rodney Tom, however, has said he would support such a plan.   Even if the plan clears committee, it will require a two-thirds vote by both houses and a vote of the people to pass. Specific details about what the tax would be used for are expected to be unveiled Wednesday.
