I know a couple of people having a rough summer and I just want to share some proof that lemons sometimes really do turn into lemonade! Here are 10 brilliant discoveries that started out as a mistake:

    Columbus discovering America!

    We have to start with this famous example. He was trying to get to China. Spain knew his calculations were off, and Portuguese spies knew of a land mass in between. But Columbus's folly allowed for the birth of America!

    Penicillin

    Some fruit went bad, some experiments got messed up, but it allowed a scientists to realize some types of mold kill bacteria!

    Microwave Ovens

    A scientist working on the nuclear bomb noticed his chocolate bar melt in his pocket even though it wasn't too warm. He realized the microwaves were heating the chocolate and an oven could be invented.

    Popsicles

    Frank Epperson received a patent for his "frozen confectionery" in the 1920s and help found the Popsicle company. He got the idea after he left a flavored drink on the porch in winter at age 11 with the stir stick still in it.

    Viagra

    A nurse in the United Kingdom noticed a strange side effect to blood pressure medication she gave older men in the hospital. She reported it to the pharmaceutical company and the bad commercials started soon after.

    Potato Chips

    A customer kept complaining his potatoes were sliced too thickly and under cooked. After having them sent back to the kitchen several times the chef cut them ridiculously thin and deep fried them until crispy.

    Teflon

    A chemical company was working on pressurized gas tanks. After one experiment-gone-wrong he discovered one of the tanks weighed more than it should empty. He was so curious he cut the tank in half and discovered a chemical reaction under high pressure during the mistake had created a unique, slippery coating on the tank's iron interior.

    Post-It Notes

    Trying to improve the glue that holds sand to sandpaper, an inventor accidentally discovered a very weak glue that stayed sticky during multiple applications. He really had to fight his employer 3M to allow him to market it to office workers.

    The inventor was trying to create an alternative material to make billiard balls.

    Silly Putty

    The military was trying to create new materials for plastic explosives. Instead they invented putty that bounced and absorbs ink!
