Lloyd Becker is challenging incumbent Sandra Kent for one of the four open Richland City Council positions. At one point, after receiving the endorsement of the Benton County GOP party, his sharp criticisms of city officials and revelations of his previous social media posts made the party reconsider and ultimately rescind their recommendation.

It has now come to light, Becker spent a year in jail and had to pay more than $20,000 in restitution after pleading guilty a decade ago to felony fraud and theft charges., He claims he's the victim of a Nigerian scam.

He was charged after he deposited more than $300,000 in counterfeit checks and money orders at three Tri-City credit unions in 2005 and 2006.

Becker's claim to investigators was that he was acting on behalf of a Nigerian company depositing their client's checks and then sending money by Western Union to another party in order to pay employees with U.S. dollars.

Becker sees all of this as a non-issue because it's so far in the past and it's removed from the current situation and race he's in.

"Once you go past the 10-year mark, then they don't look at that no more."

Becker also filed for personal bankruptcy in 1997.

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 7t
