Pet owners be warned. Your dog may love an occasional treat, but a bad batch of chicken jerky manufactured in China has reportedly made scores of dogs sick in recent months.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, they’ve received 900 reports of illness in dogs in the past seven months. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, kidney failure and other serious ailments. In some cases, even death occurred.

But despite tests on the treats, FDA officials haven’t detected any toxins. And yet, three brands of chicken jerky in particular — Waggin’ Train, Canyon Creek Ranch and Milo’s Kitchen Home-style Dog Treats — seemingly continue to cause illness in dogs.

Manufacturers say there’s nothing wrong with their treats. But one — Milo’s Kitchen — paid the owner of a sick dog $100 in exchange for waiving his rights. According to a representative for the company, the money was simply a “goodwill gesture” and doesn’t indicate liability.

Still, some dog owners, like Robin Pierre of New York, maintain that the jerky is dangerous. Pierre believes that Waggin’ Train chicken jerky is responsible for the sudden death of his two-year-old pug last fall and he’s organized an online petition to ban chicken jerky treats imported from China.
