This is just from word of mouth -- not an official report or anything -- but the word on the street is mononucleosis (mono or the "kissing disease") is exploding in Tri-Cities right now.

Mono is spread via saliva. Hence the stereotype that high school kids spread it by kissing.

In truth mono can be spread through coughing, sneezing, sharing a glass or sharing a utensil. It's less contagious than a cold, but spread in similar ways.

Young people are most susceptible to it, but in children it just looks like a flu. In teens and adults it brings on extreme lethargy.
