The Clover Island has just received a large grant to help transform 1.4 acres of hard rock shoreline with plants and a friendlier habitat for both people and animals.

The Port of Kennewick was awarded the $500,000 state grant to improve the walkway for pedestrians, cyclists, skaters, joggers and restore the shoreline for migrating salmon.

The Port of Kennewick has merged that money with $3.5 million in other local and federal money to help Clover Island get a $4 million makeover.

Construction is expected to begin sometime in early 2020, according to reports.

The state grants are funded by lease money the Department of Natural Resources' receives from 2.6 million acres of state-owned tidelands and shorelines.
