Late yesterday we learned the news that ‘Game of Thrones’ season 5 had wrought a large addition to the cast, but the latest shocker from HBO’s epic fantasy-drama, proves even bigger. IMAX big! Not only has ‘Game of Thrones’ partnered with hundreds of theaters for its first ever IMAX TV screenings, but so too will the first season 5 trailer debut exclusively with the larger-than-Westeros event!

Per the early Tuesday announcement, HBO will debut a ‘Game of Thrones’ “movie” event in 150 IMAX theaters for one week, from January 23-29, remastering the final two season 4 installments “The Watchers on the Wall” and “The Children” for an IMAX presentation. Not only that, but the screenings will also debut the full ‘Game of Thrones’ season 5 trailer, providing a closer look at the 2015 episodes than those rinky-dink “Sight” teasers likely ever would.

Says HBO marketing of the screening promotion, which itself marks the first major TV conversion for IMAX presentation:

The cinematic brilliance and grand scope of the series is perfect for the IMAX format. We are always looking to provide fans with new and exciting ways to experience the show and viewing two key episodes, along with the new trailer, on such an impressive platform makes for a great event.

Adds IMAX executive VP Greg Foster:

We couldn’t think of a series more fitting than Game of Thrones to be the first presented in IMAX. The scope and production quality of the show is quite remarkable, which will be highlighted even further in select IMAX locations – allowing fans, as never before, to become a part of author George R. R. Martin’s world that [showrunners] David Benioff and D. B. Weiss created for HBO. It has the action, storyline and epic nature that our fans seek in IMAX and we’re thrilled to team with HBO and our longtime partners at Warner Brothers to offer audiences a chance to experience it in the ultimate theatre setting joined by other fans of the series.

While we wait for ‘Game of Thrones’ season 5 (already renewed for 6, with the cast signed through 7), we know of multiple returning, confirmed absent, and new characters cast, including those that confirm we’ll be visiting the oft-mentioned kingdom of Dorne, for which Spain will double. As expected, the story will draw heavily from George R.R. Martin’s fourth and fifth novels, ‘A Feast for Crows’ and ‘A Dance with Dragons,’ while HBO has also provided a list of directors, as well as insight into which literary stories may not make the transition to film.

We’ll also have a preview featurette to follow in February, but what say you? Does ‘Game of Thrones’ IMAX conversion prime you for the season 5 trailer release? Stay tuned for official listings of the screening event, check out the HBO 2015 trailer below, and give us your predictions for the new season in the comments!
