Details are emerging now about the two car street race that resulted in one car being destroyed and the driver ending up in the hospital.

Pasco police say two street racers were eastbound on A street, approaching Elm. A Pasco school bus with no students on board was preparing to turn left, also east, onto A from Elm.

The driver indicated they saw the two cars in the far distance, but appeared to have plenty of time. As the bus crossed the center turn lane on the two-lane road and prepared to enter the 35-mph speed zone, the two cars literally 'exploded' onto the scene. Turns out they were street racing, side by side at speeds approaching 90-95 mph.

The car on the right had a chance to swerve slightly and pass the bus on the right, But the car pictured, the Honda Civic, had to swerve to the left much more to avoid the bus. The driver laid down a skid mark that was 187 feet long, and his car slammed underneath the rear corner of the bus. Not only did it destroy the front end, it peeled the hood and some of the roof from the car.

Pasco fire crews had to cut off pieces to extract the driver, but most of the damage was done in the crash. The 17-year-old driver was taken to the hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Police say the other white car, the one that 'disappeared,' is still being sought. Anyone with any information is asked to call (509)-545-3421. All leads can be confidential.
