Selena Gomez was "having panic attacks" before her recent hospitalization at a mental health facility, Entertainment Tonight reports.

The pop star, who is allegedly currently being treated at a psychiatric facility on the East Coast, apparently decided to check herself in for mental health treatment after being in the hospital due to complications from her 2017 kidney transplant to treat Lupus.

"It's very hard for Selena because she loves to work and stay busy," a source told ET. "Unfortunately, the amount of time spent at the hospital, without much improvement created anxiety for Selena, and made her extremely emotional, causing her to have panic attacks."

Ultimately, they added, the anxiety caused by the medical complications and extended hospital stay caused Gomez to suffer an emotional breakdown.

"Selena and her family decided it was best to have her go back to the East Coast mental health facility she went to earlier in the year, when she was feeling depressed and anxious."

According to the source, Gomez is "getting better every day."

"Selena is a fighter and we will be back in no time, but for now she is listening to the doctors and staying healthy with exercise, a diet plan and being monitored by doctors at the facility," they shared.

After the news of Gomez's mental health facility stint broke this week, her ex, Justin Bieber, was spotted looking distressed while leaving church service on Wednesday evening (October 10).
