On ‘Smash,’ city girl Katharine McPhee plays a country girl trying to become a city girl as she enters the competitive world of Broadway theater. Next week’s episode finds McPhee’s character embracing her “redneck” side as she performs in a karaoke bar.

Normally, karaoke calls to mind ugly images of sloppy, off-key performances in dive bars, but McPhee’s character Karen is spot-on as she sings Gretchen Wilson‘s No. 1 country hit ‘Redneck Woman.’ Karen has returned to Iowa for a baby shower, so she gets to spend some time at the local bar with her girlfriends, whom she invites on stage with her during the sing-along.

Some people look down on me, but I don’t give a rip / I’ll stand barefooted in my own front yard with a baby on my hip,” Karen sings as she kicks off her heels.

PEOPLE says the rest of the episode revolves around recruiting investors for the Marilyn Monroe-themed musical and casting the male lead for the part of baseball player Joe DiMaggio, Monroe’s husband. ‘Smash’ airs on NBC on Monday nights at 10PM ET.
