Moviegoers lined up to see Robert Downey, Jr. in ‘Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,’ giving the sleuthing sequel a $40 million showing and the top spot at the box office this weekend.
In news that will likely surprise exactly no one, ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1′ glittered and gored its way to a spectacular $139.5 million premiere this weekend, giving the latest film in the popular franchise the fifth-largest domestic opening in history.
The swashbuckling feline from the ‘Shrek’ franchise, ‘Puss In Boots,’ still has plenty of lives to spare after its weekend haul of $34 million, putting it at the top of the charts in its first week of release.
In what has ironically turned out to be the franchise that just won’t die, ‘Final Destination 5′ opens in theaters Friday, promising more gore, more violence and, yes, more death.
If you’re sick of the franchise, or if you just prefer something lighter, there are two comedies brand-new to choose from this weekend. One is the R-Rated ’30 Minutes or Less,’ which re-teams Oscar-nominated actor Jesse Eisenberg (‘The Social Network’) with his ‘Zombieland’ director, Ruben Fleischer, in this flick about a bank robbery gone horribly wrong.
Or, if you’re feeling a bit more musically inclined, there’s always ‘Glee Live! 3-D!’, the latest incarnation from Fox’s uber-successful TV series.
The Harrison Ford/Daniel Craig sci-fi vehicle ‘Cowboys & Aliens’ tied with ‘The Smurfs’ for first place at the box office, with each taking in $36.2 million in their debut weekend.
The blockbuster ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2′ dropped to fourth, earning a total of $318.4 million in the three weeks since its release, while ‘Friends with Benefits,’ ‘Horrible Bosses,’ and ‘Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon’ dropped out of the top five.

The 'Hangover' boys were back for another booze-filled adventure this weekend, and as box office estimates showed, audiences were more than willing to go along for the ride.
The sequel to the 2009 smash comedy took in a whopping $105.8 million over four days, helping to make this weekend the biggest Memorial Day weekend ever at the box office.
Even better for 'Part II,' its $86.0 intake between Friday and Sunday was the highest ever for a comedy, and the second-highest for an R-rated movie, behind only 'The Matrix Reloaded.'
Once again, an animated movie found itself ruling the weekend box office.
In this case, it was 'Rio.' The high-flying kids' movie, which features the voice talent of Anne Hathaway, Jesse Eisenberg and more, pulled in an estimated $40 million, making it the year's best opening thus far.
Coming in at a distant second was the much-anticipated 'Scream 4,' which opened with an underwhelming $19.3 million. That number is especially disappointing, considering 'Scream 3' grossed $34.7 million in its opening weekend 11 years ago.
April 15, 2011 It looks like it's going to be an exciting weekend for three new movies opening today. There's a lot of variety and almost something for everyone. It's hard to say which film will take the top spot at the box office, as the popular 'Scream' franchise returns with its fourth installment against the animated feature 'Rio,' which looks like it could appeal to kids and adults. Also opening: the Robert Redford-directed historical drama 'The Conspirator.'
