The other night I asked a couple people -- including a stranger -- how much we should pay the babysitter if the kids were asleep the whole time. They all said, "Nothing." WHAT?! I know that's not right, but how much is fair? We usually end up paying between $13-$16 for three kids age 6 and below for between 2-3 hours (they're usually asleep for at least some of it). Is that good? What's fair?

My wife is about to spend $400 on a pair of sneakers because that's what her son wants for Christmas. It's not unusual for families to drop $1,000 per kid on Christmas. I think that's absurd! We didn't have a lot of money growing up, but we didn't lack either. I think Christmas has become too commercialized. We can only blame ourselves for that if we're spending a huge percentage of our annual salary on stuff our kids will only use or play with for a couple of hours. Sometimes it feels like a dump truck full of money. How much do you think is TOO much to give gives for Christmas?
