If you were to ask me what my ideal life would be, I would unquestionably tell you that all I want is to solve a series of mysteries, each more fiendish than the last, alongside my faithful Pokemon friends. It is my fondest and most fervent wish, and now it's coming true. Sort of. In Japan.

Despite the fact that I try to keep up on Pokemon news, I'd never heard of this, which you know because if I had, I wouldn't have been talking about anything else, but on February 3, Great Detective Pikachu: Birth of a New Duo will be released on the Nintendo eShop for the 3DS. The game tells the story of a hard-boiled Pokemon detective in an adorable hat who runs around solving crimes with his human pal --- and you can watch the trailer for it right now!

One thing you might've noticed about Detective Pikachu is that, unlike most other Pokémon, he seems to be a pretty chatty partner. This, I think, is something that probably helps when you're investigating crimes, but it also led me to start creating a narrative for this character in my head. We know, after all, that Meowth was driven to learn how to speak like a human by love, and shattered with heartbreak that drove him to a life of crime, so presumably, Detective Pikachu had a similar catalyst --- but one motivated by a love of justice.

As for whether Great Detective Pikachu will see an American release, that remains to be seen, but it's hard to believe that it won't find its away here as part of Pokemon's year-long 20th Anniversary celebrations.
