Uggie is one of the most famous dogs in Hollywood that you might not have known about. But you should, because he’s reportedly performing at the Oscars alongside Billy Crystal. Can you believe it? This news is bittersweet, though, because shortly afterwards he’ll be hanging up his bow tie and leaving Hollywood for good.

The 10-year-old Jack Russell terrier, who starred in ‘The Artist’ opposite Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo, has been “suffering from a shaking syndrome” that’s prematurely forcing him into retirement, according to his trainer Omar Von Miller. “We’ve spent thousands trying to figure out what is causing it but the experts don’t really know. All the vets can tell us, after all the scans and tests, is that it is neurological and he is not suffering.”

Hollywood will be sad to see this beloved canine go, but Uggie had a good run. Besides ‘The Artist,’ he’s played the role of Queenie in ‘Water for Elephants’ with Robert Pattinson, he’s been on the ‘Today’ show and ‘The Graham Norton Show,’ and he’ll be in a skit on the Oscars stage. That’s more than a lot of human actors have accomplished in their lifetimes. What’s his final obstacle? Winning the animal version of an Academy Award, a Golden Collar. And his competish? The doberman from ‘Hugo.’ We think Uggie can take him. Check out some photos of one of Hollywood’s most unsung stars below.
