Ever wondered why February is only 28 days long, and occasionally 29?

Because it is stupid.

Seriously though, before around 700 BC, the calendar only had 10 months ranging from March to December, and then the winter period, which wasn't important to the harvest season. So the Romans decided to edit the calendar to make it more accurate. This created January and February, originally making it about 23 days long. Then much later around 40 BC, the calendar was edited again to follow a solar month rather than a lunar month, which brought it up to where it is now.
