The 2016 Super Bowl match-up between the Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers was the only topic worth talking about on Sunday (Feb. 7). The action that took place on the field may have been the focal point for many watching the game, but it was the halftime show that was the real main event of the festivities, which included sets from Coldplay, Bruno Mars and Beyonce. While all three acts brought their A-game to the stage, it was Mars who made sure to rep for hip-hop by paying homage to rap legend MC Hammer.

The singer, who gave an enthralling performance of his pop smash, "Uptown Funk," offered a hint on Twitter as to a special surprise he had in store for the people. "We were gonna rock suits but I changed my mind. We posted in the Bay so it's Hammer Time! #Woop #SB50," Mars tweeted, effectively building even more anticipation for the halftime show.

During his set at the 5:34-mark above, Mars and his team step out wearing black leather gear and thick rope chains, a nod to Hammer's fashion choice of the '90s. Then there came the moves from Mars and company, which throw it back to the rapper's famed video for "U Can't Touch This."

MC Hammer, a native of Oakland (which isn't far from Levi's Stadium where the Super Bowl was taking place) caught wind of Mars' gesture during his performance and returned the praise. "Salute @BrunoMars That was excellent !!! Y'all did that. Appreciate the Love." When a Twitter user suggested that he should've been a part of the show himself, Hammer accepted the compliment, but made it clear that he was satisfied with the fact that his influence on pop culture is still prevalent.

"Thank you but I really enjoyed seeing, feeling my presence ..it's humbling and @BrunoMars and his crew are da #truth," the rapper responded, before continuing to show his appreciation and respect for Bruno Mars and his team. "My homeboys say they love @BrunoMars and they put that on #Townbidness #BayArea."

Hammer may be more than two decades removed from his prime, but Bruno Mars' wardrobe choice and moves onstage prove his legacy is still respected.
