The Pendleton School District has programs for supporting families on the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation. State and federal grants fund programs aimed at helping kids on the reservation have good attendance. One school is trying something new to help kids be proud of their school and excited to attend: putting their native language on public signs!

Starting in mid June the translation of the SCHOOL was added to the front sign, and school buses will soon have translations painted on the sides!

Experts in the district say they're unique in this approach.

It's a pretty smart idea to make kids proud of and curious about their heritage!
