It wasn’t long after Jax Teller left the Sons of Anarchy behind that FX started gearing up for a potential spinoff, and it seems the Mayans are finally getting their day. Kurt Sutter’s Mayans MC series has an official pilot order at the network, along with a synopsis set in a “post Jax Teller world.”

Sutter co-wrote the new project with producing partner Elgin James, and will return to direct the pilot as an executive producer. Production will commence in March, while the first synopsis reveals our new hero:

Mayans MC is set in a post Jax Teller world, where EZ Reyes, a prospect in the Mayan MC charter on the Cali/Mexi border, struggles with his desire for vengeance against the cartel, and his need for respect from the women he loves.

Previously, FX described Mayans MC as a “dark, visceral family drama that takes a new look at the most American of icons, the 1% outlaw, this time reflected through a Latino lens.” The present day setting could allow for occasional crossover with surviving Sons of Anarchy characters. , while Emilio Rivera is rumored to reprise his former role as Mayans president Marcus Álvarez.

Casting will arrive in the coming months, but does the Sons of Anarchy franchise have enough gas for another go with the Mayans MC?
