A lot of casual hockey fans are probably unaware that the United States hockey team has gone without a gold medal since 1980's "Miracle on Ice." That's 18 years before the incorporation of NHL players.
Like everybody else, I was surprised when Curling became an Olympic sport in 1998. It's basically shuffle board on ice. Each team has eight stones they slide on the ice to land in four concentric circles. The brooms are to speed up, slow down, or change the trajectory of the stones. But I'm becoming a fan.
The United States dominated a new Olympic sport, and the host nation of Russia claimed its first gold of the Sochi Games during the first weekend of competition. Here's a recap of this weekend's action:
Americans haven't been very excited about the Sochi Olympics. Shaun White won't be there, Lindsay Vonn won't be there. People are upset about Russia's treatment of our government and their own minorities. Plus, Sochi seems like a boring city with incomplete infrastructure. That said, "DON'T FORGET TO WATCH THE OPENING CEREMONIES!"
