Lots of businesses have closed their doors due to the Pandemic.

It's particularly sad when we learn of local business closures, such as Foodies in Kennewick and Richland. But what about major retail stores like Bed Bath and Beyond and now, the latest, Macy's?

In a report, the popular retail store acknowledged the planned closure of about 150 stores through 2026 as part of new plan to save the company $100 million in costs.

Macy's started closing locations over the last couple of years attempting to recover from their losses. They began by closing under-performing locations. The closures are part of a plan to streamline Macy's to adapt to changing trends and a more challenging retail culture. The company will be implementing more automation services.

The new plan is in addition to Macy's decision in January to close five stores and cut 2,350 jobs, or 3.5% of its overall workforce. The retailer had stores in 718 locations as of fourth quarter end.

The five stores closing are NOT located in Washington. They are:

San Leandro, California
Simi Valley, California
Lihue, Hawaii
Tallahassee, Florida
Arlington, Virginia

There are 22 Macy's stores in Washington State.

In Tri-Cities Macy's operates a mall location on Columbia Center Boulevard and there's a Macy's Furniture Gallery on Tapteal Drive in Richland. For now, it appears all of the Macy's in Washington remain safe from closing. Although, it makes one wonder for how long?

Remaining optimistic, Macy's is after-all, synonymous with Thanksgiving. It's tradition to watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. This year's parade is set for November 28th.
