The Hermiston newspaper had an interesting article lately about the rising expense of Quinceanaras. It sounds like the American Sweet Sixteen parties have influenced the once-humble family event. Both seem to be getting out of control... what do YOU think?

Quinceanaras were traditionally "coming out" parties where girls were presented to the community as women. In some places it meant they were now datable and old enough for marriage. Sweet Sixteen parties are the modern equivalent of debutante balls, held for girls age 16-21 meaning roughly the same things as the Quinceanaras.

The Hermiston article quotes parents and grandparents saying the party used to be a simple affair -- mostly for family. They now cost thousands of dollars -- sometimes tens of thousands. Same for Sweet Sixteens.

ON THE ONE HAND, I agree with making young women excited about growing up and taking on adult roles and responsibilities. I agree with celebrating the value of young women.

ON THE OTHER HAND, I don't like that the parties send the message the girls are old enough for romantic relationships and I don't like the rising costs of these parties.
