The city of Yakima is an interesting place to live. Sometimes it feels like one of the tiniest towns ever and other times it feels rather semi-metropolitan. All I know is that as much as I would love for Yakima to grow in population, I keep giving people the stinkeye when it comes up in conversation because I am a selfish lady! I don't want people from the Westside of the Cascades snatching up all our available rentals and houses for sale because then WE don't have any left for us locals, but I digress.

If you've lived in Yakima for a while you might think these questions people are Googling before they move to Yakima. I think they are ridiculously dumb, but that's because I'm apparently become a Yakima snob. I'm not really one to talk, I'm sure I probably looked up these a bunch of these questions myself before I moved here from Nashville, Tennessee, almost 20 years ago! 😂

10. Does Yakima Get Snow?

Uh, yes, yes we do, although these past couple of years have been kind of spotty. We usually see some snow in December, but especially in January and February. If you crave the snow and there's none to be found in Yakima, you can best believe there is a bunch of it up at White Pass, Snoqualmie, and possibly Leavenworth.

You betcha! It's airport code is YKM. We are so lucky to have an airport but the infuriating parts are that we only have one airline (Alaska Airlines), it is ridiculously expensive to get a flight to Seattle (I'm talking $200+ EACH WAY), and there are only so many flights per day (two in the morning and two at night).

8. Does Yakima Have a Mall?

Fun Fact: The city of Union Gap was the original location of Yakima. It literally blends into the Yakima city limits and if you blink, you might not even notice. The Valley Mall is our mall. There used to be a mall in downtown Yakima but it closed down over a decade ago. (If you listen closely, you might hear the sound of people still compolaining about the big parking lot that belonged to the Yakima Mall.)

7. Are Yakima Wineries Open?

The wineries, oh the beautiful wineries we have in Yakima and the surrounding Valley. My personal favorite is Two Mountain Winery in Zillah but that's another story for another day. Yes, our wineries are still open during the pandemic. If you drink wine, this should get through another wave of variants!

6. Does Yakima Have 5G?

I don't know about YOUR cell phone provider, but mine has 5G (T-Mobile). I used to have Cricket and they didn't have it. I am, however, still waiting for those magnetic 5G microchip trackers to kick in from my COVID vaccine. When they do, I guess I'm supposed to turn into a zombie?? At least, that's what the freaks on the internet are saying is happening. My life is pretty boring, it might be fun to become a zombie for a little while, who knows! 😂

4. Does Yakima Have Uber?

We've got Uber, Ubereats, Doordash, Grubhub, Instacart. I've been out of the loop for a while so we might even have a couple more of those kinds of rideshares and food delivery services that I don't know about.

3. Is Yakima a Real Place?

Just because the fictional iCarly was going to move to Yakima with her Grandpa in "i Wanna Stay with Spencer" on Season 1, episode 5, doesn't mean our town is fake. We are definitely real...or ARE WE? If I find out that I am actually stuck in The Matrix and writing this from the other side of another dimension, I am going to be so mad!

They are definitely open and if you want to see a show without any kids, then I strongly suggest you see a movie at The Orion Cinemas (202 E Chestnut Ave). You can order food and adult drinks from a recliner because they have seats with BUTTONS!

Hey, most of us still don't know what that is supposed to mean bu we have a sign to prove it!

Bonus:

1. Why Is Yakima So Expensive? (This is actually a very good question and not ridiculous to ask in any way!)

Chile, I wish I could understand the answer to that one, too. The cost of living is rising exponentially. It makes me very sad!

2. What Is Yakima Known for?

Let's see, there are a bunch of things Yakima is known for: Hops that make beer, crime rates, people breaking out of prison, that city iCarly was going to move to, Yakima Racks, the Fresh Hop Ale Festival, James Beard Award-Winning tamales (okay, so that's really in Union Gap, but I told you Yakima BLENDS in, we blend, okay!), fabulous wines, breweries, and distilleries, and a bunch of other stuff.

Google it.
