A Road Trip that’s Guaranteed to Cure the Tri-Cities Winter Blues

In 1806 Captain Clark of the Corps of Discovery described what is now Ecola State Park in Oregon as “…the grandest and most pleasing prospects which my eyes ever surveyed…”.  I completely agree with Captain Clark and that’s why my wife and I make it a point to visit the park, which is near Cannon Beach, each year. And, there’s no better time than right now – in the dead of winter. In fact, some of the images in this article were taken in January of 2019 – right before the pandemic hit.

That particular trip was a stand-out when it comes to weather with temps in the low to mid-60s. We actually hiked in shorts and tank tops. If you’re tired of the low clouds, fog and dreary January days in Tri-Cities, a trip to Ecola State Park will lift your spirits, no matter what the weather is.

If you’ve never been, all the more reason, and if you’ve experienced it before, you know how amazingly beautiful it is.  From the sound of the ocean waves crashing below, the wind in the trees, the seagulls, and the smell of salty air – it will bless your soul with peace – something we all could use more of in our lives during these crazy times.

Ecola State Park stretches 9 miles between Seaside and Cannon Beach with picturesque scenes from the moment you enter the park in your vehicle - it truly feels like another world.  Once on one of the many trails, you’ll discover it can be challenging at times to keep your feet from getting muddy or from tripping over tree roots, but if you take your time (which I highly recommend), it’s really not a problem. And, there are plenty of areas for you to relax, take it all in and even have a picnic.
