A fire broke out near Prosser yesterday evening eventually burning over 2,500 acres and terrifying homeowners in their own back yards.

Thanks to West Benton Fire and Rescue, Benton County Fire District 2, Benton County Fire District  4, and Yakima County Fire District 5, the fire is mostly now under control and contained.

The fire started around 7:30 pm last night south of Prosser's Painted Hills subdivision. Officials told residents from Richards Road to Lincoln Grade to prepare for evacuation when over 50 homes were threatened by the fire, according to reports.

Around 2:30 am, the state Fire Marshal's Office assigned 3 more fire engines to battle the blaze. After battling high winds and heat all night, the fire was 80% contained by 5 am and the evacuations were lifted.

Benton County fire says that "very dry conditions, high temperatures and wind contribute to the rapid spread of fire". The cause is still under investigation.

Thanks to Michele Villarreal for the pictures. Her house and family were at risk last night. Glad everyone is ok!
