Home Alone was released in theaters on November 16, 1990. It was the #1 movie at the box office for an incredible 12 straight weeks. It stayed in the Top 10 until April. It played in theaters for nine months and earned over $477 million making it the highest grossing live-action comedy of all-time. (At least until The Hangover Part 2 came along). There was originally an extended dream sequence planned for Home Alone in which Kevin McCallister’s house comes to life and tries to kill him. Director Chris Columbus was forced to cut the scene when there wasn’t enough money in the film’s $17 million for the elaborate special effects.
