Is It Illegal To Stretch Your Gas Pump Hose To The Opposite Side Of Your Vehicle?

We've all done it. You know you have but is it legal? My wife is from Oregon and had said that many years ago when she pulled into a gas station with her car on the opposite side of the car, the service attendant said it was against the law to extend the gas.

Will Washington Police Ticket You For Filling Up On The Opposite Side Of Your Car

I know we've all done it before where we've tried to stretch the hose across our rig when we've pulled in the wrong way. I had times when I was running on fumes and stretched those old hoses across my car but the question remains, could I get a ticket in Washington State for doing it?

I did a quick search and yes people are asking the same question. I was surprised by what Washington State requires.

What Does Washington Law Say About Stretching Out The Gas Pump Hose

Normally Washington State has some quirky laws so I was expecting to find some goofy law on the books concerning gassing up the opposite away and here's what I found.

I couldn't find any statute in Washington Law State concerning pumping your gas from the opposite side. I did discover that you will be at the mercy of the length of the hoses from the different gas stations around Washington State. Older hoses are just shorter than some of the newer gas station hoses.

I saw a lot of postings concerning Costco that they've deliberately made their hoses extra long so if you do find yourself on the opposite side of your tank, the hose will stretch.

Costco does a ton of gas business and it totally makes sense that they come up with that situation with short hoses.

My wife's myth is busted and the gas attendant that said it was the law obviously didn't want to take the effort to stretch the hose.

It is ok to stretch the hose if you have to and if it reaches the other side, you are good to go.

I'm enclosing a great article that dwells more in-depth on the question here but in the State of Washington, you aren't breaking the law and that's a good thing.
