Benton County Is Cracking Down After Street Racing Complaints Keep Coming

The Benton County Sheriff's Office has been dealing with the issue of racing in several areas lately. Most recently, traffic complaints have been made in the Oak/Bowles area.

Last Night, a Suspect Who Fled the Scene of an Accident Was Located and Arrested

Deputies responded to an injury collision near the intersection after witnesses reported hearing vehicles racing in the area.

The driver, Salvador Mendoza is accused of causing $10,000 worth of damage to private property, and Benton PUD equipment. Not only was there damage to private property, a vehicle was completely totaled. According to the Benton County Sheriff's Office:

Our deputies quickly began their investigation. A couple hours later, Deputies Jech and McMillan located Salvador during a traffic stop in Richland, where he was taken into custody for hit and run. Charges will also be sent to the Benton County Prosecutor’s Office for those that have been identified in helping Salvador flee the scene.

Leaving the Scene of an Accident is a Serious Crime in Washington

Under Washington State law, drivers are required to stop immediately. Fleeing an accident that causes personal injury is a Class C felony.

Crews with Benton PUD will be in the area to make necessary repairs. The Benton County Sheriff's Office is thanking the witness who provided key information leading to the arrest of the suspect.
