People ‘Filling Up’ Closed Columbia River Island with Trash
Not only is the island closed to the public, but now the Franklin County Sheriff's Office says it's being littered with all sorts of garbage.
Island is just downstream from the Chiawana boat launch
The island is shown on maps as Carpet Island, also known as Goat Island or Chiawana Island. The FCSO says the island is clearly closed to the public, with blue signs posted in numerous places.
However, patrols of the area have turned up a significant growing trash problem, Deputies even recently rounded up a shopping cart that had been dumped there.
The FCSO reminds citizens not only to keep off the island but don't dump your garbage anywhere else, either.
The FCSO and the county have been dealing with a growing garbage problem at Carbody Beach as well.
Carpet Island was permanently closed to the public in 2016 after a long battle with trash, even hazardous waste and human waste were continually being cleaned up. There were also significant damage and vandalism issues as well.
