Turning 40. It's a milestone feared and dreaded by many, but why?

As I near the big four-O myself, I'm starting to see it in a whole new light. Instead of a run-of-the-mill, done-to-death "Lordy, Lordy, look who's 40" rant, I'd rather celebrate 40 years of you and I.

It's a time of reflection and growth.

By the time you reach your 40s, they say you've gathered years of life experience and a dash of wisdom.

You've had your fair share of mistakes and successes, and you've learned from them all. Theoretically, anyway. If you haven't, now's perfect time to reflect on your losses, your accomplishments and set new goals.

You know who you are and what you're not.

Not to be all creepy and depressing, but by the time you're 40, you've lived almost half of your life. You've had time to get to know yourself, your values, and the things you're passionate about. Just as important, you know what you don't want.

It's a time to prioritize your needs.

As we age, our bodies and health become more of a priority. For a lot of us, the last few years of our thirties are wake-up call to take better care of ourselves. Whether that means getting more sleep, eating healthier, starting a new fitness routine, or hell, having better sex, 40 reminds us to put our needs first.

Because of where you've been, you know where you're going.

By your 40s, you've likely established yourself in a career or profession. You have a sense of what you want to achieve in your professional life and the path you want to take. You own your $h!t and you're done taking it from everyone. Get it, you almost-forty-something!

If you're an Idahoan nearing or turning 40, live up this big ole milestone and the incredible person you've become. Embrace your faults, your strengths, and keep growing.
