Not a huge surprise, given that Little League nationally and locally in Richland, Pasco and Walla Walla have cancelled their baseball, Kennewick National and Kennewick American Cal Ripken and Babe Ruth leagues in Kennewick are in the same boat.

Now, Kennewick Grid Kids, the largest youth football organization in the Tri-Cities and SE WA, have announced the cancellation of the 2020 season. It included in part, this statement:

"The Kennewick Grid Kids board of directors met on Wednesday, July 29th. With no options off the table, we discussed the future of the 2020 fall season at length. We considered a variety of scenarios including holding a full season, condensing our season, modifying our rules, and providing alternatives such as 7on7. After extensive review and discussion it was determined there is no viable path forward for a season in any form this fall. This was a heartbreaking decision to come to and not taken lightly."

The email sent to parents of players and others spelled out the various scenarios working against the league as far as COVID goes, including not having field use for practices. KGK normally utilizes KSD school fields for practicing. Also Insurance limitations, liability, and WIAA guidelines.  The league does not strictly follow WIAA HS standards, but since it's inception has used them as template to follow for calendars, practices etc.

HOWEVER, there is a bright spot:

"We are excited to announce plans for our first ever KGK Spring Football season to coincide with the WIAA football season beginning in March! We are in the process of working out the details but look for an announcement with more information in the coming months."

There are six organizations in the league, Colts, Panthers, Bears, Eagles, Huskies and Coyotes...each with a D, C, B, and A squad (team) broken down by both age and player weight.   Games are played at the 3 KGK fields next to Eastgate Elementary on 10th, on the north side of the B-F Fairgrounds. After playoff games, the top 2 teams at each level meet in the KGK Super Bowls at Lampson Stadium, usually first week in November (pictured).
