Many figured that was the reason why, but this week it became official:  national retailer Forever21 will not be opening up in Columbia Center Mall.

Months ago, in January, mall officials announced the clothing and accessory dealer known for latest trends, styles and fashions would occupy a 12,000 square foot space in the mall.  Officials were excited as it coincided with this year being the 50th anniversary of Columbia Center, which opened in 1969.

However, Forever21 filed for bankruptcy in September, putting the store in doubt. The retailer, which operates about 800 stores, will close 178 in the US and some 350 overall, as it has some overseas.

The chain will remain open as will it's online presence, but no new outlets will be opened due to the filing. Several other planned stores in other cities were also cancelled due to the filing, according to the New York Times and Wall Street Journal.

Columbia Center has put up signage about new business coming soon.
