There wasn’t much surprise to be had with Netflix renewing its Series of Unfortunate Events for Season 2, given that author Lemony Snicket Daniel Handler had already been preparing as much. That said, even more misery is in store with a confirmed third season, likely to be adaptation’s last.

The Hollywood Reporter confirms that A Series of Unfortunate Events will return for Season 3, though Netflix had no official comment. The second season will consist of ten episodes, adapting the fifth novel (The Austere Academy) through the ninth (The Carnivorous Carnival), while Handler previously stated that a third season would adapt the remaining books:

I’ve been working in my own dining room with a team of writers I’m really loving on the next season, and we hope to get the go-ahead to do season 3, which… given how quickly young actors age and change, we’re trying to film everything as quickly as possible. The second season is laid out to be 10 episodes for the next five books, so it ends on The Carnivorous Carnival, and the third season would be the rest of it.

In the meantime, Season 1 of Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events is available to binge on Netflix, at your peril.
