Oregon Accuses Saudi Arabia of Helping Criminals Escape Justice
According to government officials, visiting college students from Saudi Arabia have committed serious crimes (including rape and manslaughter) in eight states and then vanished after posting bail -- likely with the help of the Saudi government.
Five former students are on the lam from Oregon law enforcement for rape, a hit-and-run, or possessing child pornography. In each case, bail was posted in a mysterious way, then a car picked them up from jail, and then they were never heard from again.
According to multiple media reports, the U.S. State Department and U.S. Department of Justice are aware of the phenomena, but have not committed to taking action.
Parents of victims are furious. This was in no way traditional protection of citizens from unfair prosecution or unusual punishment. In each Oregon case (and presumably in the other 7 states) this was mysterious, clandestine escape of justice before due process could be performed.
