Humpback Whale Near Seattle Releases Seal From Mouth
I am intrigued by everything to do with the ocean and the creatures that live beneath the surf.
Where can I see whales in Washington?
I'm quite convinced we have no idea what huge prehistoric predators live where we have no way to see or study them. It's interesting and also horrifying!
I love to learn about the ocean and its effects on our climate and well-being.
Do whales commonly eat Seals?
I remember when I was a kid there was a whale trapped in ice and everyone was keeping themselves updated with the evening news. Seriously it kept me awake at night.
So, of course, I was happy to see the story about the whale that had scooped up a Sea Lion in its giant mouth and gently released it back into the sea.
If this had been an Orca Whale the story would have ended much differently. Whale watchers in the San Juan De Fuca caught a glimpse of a humpback whale known as "Zillion" feeding on a school of small bait fish, said Erin Gless, executive director of the Pacific Whale Watch Association.
Humpback whales eat small fish and krill only and not seals! (I never knew this) their throats are only the size of a grapefruit.
I went on a shark expedition once. It was the most fascinating experience. I learned to Scuba Dive which was so incredible. I had no idea I'd enjoy that so much!
We never spotted a whale during that trip, but we did see plenty of sharks and tagged the baby ones we caught and released.
We chummed for the sharks and when they came around, we went underwater in a Shark Cage to witness them up close. It was an amazing adventure and I loved it. But, I am still leery of swimming in the open ocean.
I do love to be on the ocean shores though! And I love to see and read about everything in the ocean!
