The Benton Franklin Humane Society is seeing a spike in the number of stray dogs dropped off to the shelter or delivered by Animal Control. This is normal for October and there are three main reasons that will make you so mad!

1. When a dog is bought or bred to be a hunting dog and they don't have the temperament for it the owner usually realizes this in October and takes it to the shelter because they don't want it anymore.

2. When people get dogs in the summer and want it for an outdoor pet, they must spend big money to keep it warm and comfortable during winter or let it inside. When this reality hits in October, they take it to the shelter.

3. When migrant farm workers arrive at the beginning of harvest season they obtain a dog for a pet, but when the harvest is done they abandon it before moving to their next job.
