The Unanimous AL Rookie of the Year Balls for the Seattle Mariners

2020 has been so dang weird, on so many fronts, and sports has definitely not been spared, but a unanimous pick by the Baseball Writers' Association of America for the American League Rookie of the Year and hardly anyone knows the guy?

Sports on TV ratings are way down across the board, but besides the obvious, COVID-19, did you think to wonder why?

How about when everyone got the green light to resume, however it looked, they were all crashing each other's party. Hockey playoffs, the NBA playoffs in a bubble, the NFL got going, college football limped out of the gate, the U.S. Open Golf Championship, this was all happening basically at the same time, competing for eyeballs.

Believe it or not, the only sport where ratings actually went up was the WNBA. Rafael Nadal put on an absolute French Open tennis clinic against Novak Djokovic, dismantling the number one player in the world in an amazing match that no one probably even knew happened, let alone watched.

So, with all that, congratulations to the Seattle Mariners OF Kyle Lewis, the unanimous choice for the AL Rookie of the Year Award. The Baseball Writers' Association of America chose the M's center fielder for the top of every ballot, all 30 possible first place votes, went to Lewis. He is the 12th player to win the award by a unanimous vote. Outfielder Luis Robert of the Chicago White Sox was second followed by the Houston Astros right-handed pitcher Cristian Javier.

Lewis hit .262 with a .801 OBP (on base percentage), swatting 11 taters and driving in 28 runs with five steals in 58 total games.

Lewis is the first Seattle Mariner to win the AL Rookie of the Year Award since Ichiro Suzuki in 2001.This marks the fourth time a Seattle player has been honored. The others were first baseman Alvin Davis in 1984 and closer Kazuhiro Sasaki in 2000.
