The Dept. of Homeland Security is upset Washington state and New Mexico don't require proof of legal residence on state driver's licenses. They have given the WA Dept. of Licensing 30 days from Oct. 10 to change or TSA officials won't accept WA licenses for boarding flights!

The Seattle Times says Homeland Security keeps going back and forth on whether the Jan. 10 deadline is firm. It sounds like you may or may not be able to get on a plane for your ski vacation with the old licenses. But either way, the window is closing.

You can still board planes with passports.

The ENHANCED license (that allows you to visit Canada) works. Only 500,000 people have those in Washington. And you can upgrade to an enhanced license for only $3 per year remaining on the license (plus the proof of legal residency like a birth certificate).
