I read a story in the Tri-City Herald today that the Umatilla School board is thinking of requiring students who participate in sports/extracurricular activities to submit to random drug testing. The program could cost the school district $10,000. According to the story in the Herald there was only one drug incident involving marijuana on campus last year.

Although I think this may be a good idea for schools with drug issues I have mixed feelings with this issue in general. I think students should be required to have a certain GPA to participate in extracurricular activities. Drug testing may go to far. What do you think? Is this something schools should be doing or is it up to parents?
