Firefighters will continue to monitor a site at Nutrien Ag Solutions in 1100 block of Midvale Road in Sunnyside after a chemical fire on Monday afternoon.

Most of the fire was extinguished leaving one building completely demolished.

From Yakima County Fire District 5:

Residents in the area (18 homes) were evacuated due to safety concerns.

Hazmat specialists were on hand advising how to proceed overnight.

Approximately 1.7 million pounds of sulfur burned. Firefighters were concerned with hazardous ammonium sulfate at the plant. About 236 pounds of the dangerous chemical burned early in the fire.

An evacuation center was set up by the American Red Cross at the Sunnyside Community Center.

Crews from Sunnyside, Granger, Grandview, Toppenish, Prosser, West Benton Fire and Rescue, Zillah, and Yakima County District 5 all responded.

Midvale Road will be closed from Emerald Road to Duffy Road possibly until Tuesday morning.

No one was injured in the blaze. The cause remains under investigation.
