The City went on to remind residents that dangerous chemicals can cause serious issues even in the back of a garbage truck:
Reminder: Please be mindful of what you place in your garbage container. Batteries of any kind, fluorescent lights, and chemicals should not go in your trash. These items can be taken for free to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility.
Batteries power many everyday items, and lithium-ion batteries are commonly found in cell phones, power tools, cameras, laptops, toys, e-cigarettes, and even greeting cards. Do not place lithium-ion batteries in your garbage container. Nationwide, approximately 5,000 battery-related fires occur each year at waste facilities across the U.S.
