Kennewick Police Nab Scammer Taking Advantage of Elderly
We need to protect our elderly from scammers and luckily Kennewick Police nabbed a scammer right in the middle of the con.
It's another case in the books for the Kennewick Police Department. Officers arrested a scammer that was attempting to use the Social Security Administration as the ruse.
According to a posting on the Kennewick Police Department's Facebook page, the suspect was arrested after attempting to swindle an elderly victim.
Here are the details according to the posting:
The suspect called claiming to be the social security administration. The suspect even used a computer to spoof the number so it looked like they were calling from the actual social security customer service number. The suspect claimed there was a problem with the victim’s social security number and told them they had to send $10,000 to an address in Texas. The scammer was convincing and the victim packaged $10,000 cash and sent it overnight air. The victim realized they may have been scammed and contacted KPD.
According to the rest of the posting, KPD Officer Safranek arrived and gathered the important details, and then he set out to try and get the victim’s money back.
KPD was able to get the package routed to another location and nabbed the scammer.
I'm glad the scammer is behind bars and I received a notice from the IRS yesterday and I knew it was legit because that's how the IRS will contact you. The IRS even reminded me in the letter that they'll never ask for your personal information over the phone.
KPD is reminding people to once again be aware of various scams and never give out their personal information to anyone.
