Producers Mulling ‘Downton Abbey’ Movie, Should They or Shouldn’t They?
Part of me is really excited about the idea of a "Downton Abbey" movie. It's only been proposed. No script is written or anything.
Why I think it's a great idea:
- A lot of storylines were never fully developed.
- We want closure with the family because we know most big houses were disintegrated by the 1950s.
- Lord Grantham gives me goosebumps when he overcomes his traditions and goofiness to "Man Up" to difficult situations, and I'd love a movie centered on that.
- I want to see the Dowager's funeral.
Why I think it's a terrible idea:
- Most movies-from-TV feel like a poorly-written season finale because it has to be written in a vacuum.
- The best scenes in 'Downton' require weeks to build up to. There must be large amounts of context to appreciate the Dowager's stingers, or Lord Grantham's heroism, or Daisy's humanity.
- Rather than a distillation of everything we like about the TV show, it will more likely be a novel farewell with a silly, contrived plot.
Now your turn. What do YOU think?
