Two hospitals in the lower Yakima Valley have filed for bankruptcy protection.

The filing took place this morning as Astria Health, the parent company of hospitals in Sunnyside and Toppenish has filed Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection. Astria Health also owns the former Yakima Regional Medical Center.

The bankruptcy protection filing will allow Astria to reorganize its billing system. Astria cites the transition of the purchase of the three hospitals and a irregular disruption of accounts payable that effected their billing.

The Chapter 11 filing will allow Astria to continue operating while providing creditor relief to the company.

Astria hopes to exit from Chapter 11 by the end of the year.
