Recently while perusing the Nextdoor App, I came across what I consider to be a pretty pertinent subject. I don't know the rules.

I’ve noticed several US flags being flown that are in extremely bad shape. Perhaps those who are flying these flags do not realize how disrespectful it is to our country - especially to the military. Please show some respect and replace your worn and tattered flags and please dispose of them properly. Thank you.

At what point is flying the American flag considered disrespectful? I get it. We want to fly our flags proudly, preferably in pristine shape. However, here, in the Tri-Cities, it's windy every other day. I see how flags can become worn rather quickly.

I Googled, "When should I replace my American flag?" I got the following:

If it is faded or tattered beyond repair, or dirty beyond cleaning, then it is time to replace the flag. Any flag that is tattered on the fly end can be repaired if the stripes (cut off where the tatter begins) are still longer than the field.

I also Googled "When should a flag be retired or disposed of?"

According to the National Flag Foundation...

The U.S. Flag Code says, “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” When an American flag is worn beyond repair, it should be retired in a respectful manner.

One man replied:

As a vet, I never find it disrespectful when the American flag is flying. At least it's flying. But when you see a crisp, clean, bright American flag in perfect condition on a well groomed property, you just know that feeling... and feel blessed to have served.
