Will I be able to See the Northern Lights this Week in Tri-Cities?
The answer is quite possibly! You should be able to see the Aurora Borealis otherwise known as the Northern Lights over the next couple of nights if the cloud cover doesn't inhibit us.
This geomagnetic storm is not expected to be as strong as the one we saw on May 11th.
Western Washington is experiencing a cold weather system with significant cloud cover this week, so the views there may not be as widespread as they are here in Eastern Washington. We may also have cloud cover but it will be spotty.
Why are Northern Lights More Visible on Camera
Tips for best aurora borealis viewing
- Move away from city light
- Get a clear view of the Northern horizon
- Get comfortable, it takes your eyes about 15 minutes to acclimate
Years ago, I was standing on my back porch (I lived in West Richland at the time) I think I went to let the dog outside or something and as I stood there, the whole sky north of me lit up a green, purplish color. It was like a wavy cloud cover streaming across the night sky!
It was spectacular! I've never seen it since. I'm hoping to catch a glimpse tonight or tomorrow night.
My northern visibility is a bit hindered where I currently live in Benton City due to tall Pine trees, so it will take some effort for me to drive out to a different location for better viewing.
I know from seeing it in the past, that the effort will be worth the sight!
