K9 IVAN Assists in Felony Arrest of Suspect in Kennewick Standoff
After a several hours-long standoff Friday night, K9 Ivan was instrumental in helping Kennewick Police arrest a 19-year old man wanted in a domestic assault incident.
Police were called to 925 South Gum Street at 10:30 for an alleged assault between Byrun Lewis and a woman. Lewis is accused of punching the female several times and choking her. Lewis also allegedly shot at the woman and her vehicle with a pellet gun.
The woman was able to flee the location and called Police. After investigation and communication with the female, Police established probable cause to arrest Lewis for Assault 2nd-Degree. It was also learned that Lewis allegedly made statements that he would "shoot it out with police."
When officers arrived at the residence, they attempted to make contact with Lewis, who was NOT responding. The Tri-City Regional SWAT team was also called in to assist.
After 5 hours, Lewis still would NOT surrender. K9 Ivan was brought in to help officers locate Lewis in the home and he was taken into custody. After a search warrant was obtained, police located the pellet gun Lewis allegedly shot at the woman.
After being treated at a local hospital, Byrun Lewis was booked into the Benton County Jail for Felony Assault and faces additional charges.
