Last night was a busy one for the Washington State Patrol. They handed out more than 100 citations at the intersection of West Clearwater and Highway 395 from 4 PM to 8 PM on Friday.

10 officers where on patrol and wrote a total of 136 tickets during the four hour emphasis patrol.

120 Tickets where written for distracted driving while the remaining where issued for seat belt violations.

WSP has stated the patrol wasn't about writing tickets but bringing awareness to the a new law.

The Distracted Driver Law is the one where a motorist can be ticketed for talking or texting on a cell phone -- even if at a red light.

Officers can also cite drivers for eating and putting on makeup.

The first ticket will cost you $136 with a second offense costing $234.

For some drivers, it's a harsh lesson to learn and for others, it's a somber reminder to stay off your cell phone.
