Wildlife Crossings in Washington
The Washington Department of Transportation uses crossings, fencing, and median barriers to encourage animals to stay away from and off of highways.
Cameras at various locations catch unbelievable images
The above video was taken from various culverts and bridges to determine how effective the crossings and structures are for the animals and how the animals use them.
According to WSDOT, wildlife fencing reduces collisions between automobiles and large animals (mainly deer) by as much as 80% to 99%. Using fencing and crossing structures, animals are able to cross or move past highways safely. Check out some fantastic footage from Conservation Northwest.
To keep animals safe, crossings have been constructed at several locations along I-90 east of Snoqualmie Pass. Cameras at several locations show a number of species are using the crossings.
The Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife, Central Washington University, USFWS Washington Fish and Wildlife Office, U.S. Forest Service - Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, and Conservation Northwest have all been monitoring and tracking areas to document wildlife along the I-90 corridor.
Truly amazing!
