One of Washington's most unusual landmarks is one worth searching out. If you have a love of animals, you'll appreciate this ingenious idea that should be adapted throughout Washington State.

I was out walking my dog Barkley and came across a squashed squirrel in the road. I'm one of those folks that really don't like stumbling across dead animals and I've had it happen a few times in the Tri-Cities and it always breaks a little bit of my heart when I see a dead animal.

Have You Ever Seen A Squirrel Bridge?

One guy in the 1960s came up with an ingenious idea and now his idea has become a Washington landmark that people seek out to take photos of. Amos Peters saw squirrels getting hit by traffic in his hometown so he decided to do something about it. He built the bridge like a suspension bridge, a lot like our Cable Bridge, in Longview Washington.

The Bridge Is Named After Another Famous Washington Bridge

I'm talking about the "Nutty Narrows Bridge" that allows squirrels to go from tree to tree without having to cross the street and getting squashed.

The bridge is so famous that it's listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Where Can I See The Nutty Narrows Bridge?

You'll have to drive to Longview Washington to see the bridge or you can check out the video below:

The video captures the squirrel as he safely crossed above traffic. The Nutty Narrows Bridge has become a must-see sight for travelers and Washingtonians alike. The bridge in some respects looks just like our Cable Bridge here in the Tri-Cities.

I Think Tri-Cities Could Use A Few Of These Bridges

Because of the success of the bridge, several more have been built. I'm thinking the Tri-Cities needs its own "squirrel" crossing bridges. They've proven to prevent traffic accidents and it's an interesting talking point.

The original is still the best though and if you are road tripping, a highlight for you might be checking out this national landmark that's a little "nutty".
