Have You Ever Seen a Columbia Basin Pygmy Rabbit?
Columbia Basin Pygmy Rabbits, and that's their common name, are among the cutest little furballs you could ever imagine. They're the smallest rabbit species in the world, according to Herebunny.com. They weigh less than a pound and can be found living naturally right here in Washington State, although they can also be found in Idaho, Oregon, Montana, Wyoming and Utah. They eat a lot of sagebrush, so desert-like places are perfect for these little guys.
Columbia Basin Pygmy Rabbits are rare and endangered these days, so chances are you've never seen one. They're extremely cautious little critters and do not wander far from the safety of their burrows. Wildfires and home building have diminished their population greatly. Hawks and coyotes have reduced populations as well. Can they be kept as pets? Some people do, but they're not the easiest to breed and care for, and you have to have a good stock of sagebrush on hand, but they will eat grass and hay also.
